After enjoying our time in Door County, WI, we traveled southwest to Devil's Lake State Park. This park is about 20 minutes south of the famous Wisconsin Dells. When we arrived, we set up camp and then traveled another 25 miles south to visit my oldest friend in the world, Courtney Anderson. Courtney and I have been friends since we were in the first grade, and she lives in Middle-of-Nowhere, Wisconsin. Just kidding, it's actually called Black Earth, WI, but I think the former name is more fitting! My kids got to meet her kids and the 5 of them had an enjoyable evening playing while the grown-ups caught up.
While I never would have ever thought I would end up in Black Earth, WI, it is really beautiful. There are some small mountains, lots of hills, and everything is green. Our campground at Devil's Lake SP is really nice. The campsite is bordered by rolling green hills and lots of trees. The hiking trails are really steep and rocky, but the overlooks are worth the effort! Check out our photo gallery to see some of the amazing sites in Devils' Lake SP.
We also couldn't skip out on Wisconsin Dells. It would be like visiting Orlando and not going to Disney. So we drove up there one afternoon. Brad likened the Dells to Pigeon Forge. I would have to agree. There are a lot of tourist-y things to do, waterparks and theme parks, but we skipped all that. After Cedar Point, anything else would pale in comparison. Instead, we took a "duck" boat tour around the Dells and into the Wisconsin River. If you are unfamiliar with duck boats, they are amphibious vehicles that can drive on the road and also float in the water. They were created for the army during WWII. While most duck boat tours around the country use reproduction boats, the place we went had actual 70+ year old surplus boats from the army. We took a tour around the Dells and boated through Lake Delton and the Wisconsin River.
